Please join us if you live in the regions of Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées, or Languedoc-Roussillon. Most meetings and activities are held within an hour or two from Toulouse; this is changing as our membership expands throughout the Southwest. Founded in 2003 with just 15 members, we now number 220 and are growing. More...

Helping U.S. citizens in France stay informed and engaged with the American political scene as well as assisting them to vote by absentee ballot are two of our most important goals.

More about DAFSW

Our main goal is to assist U.S. citizens—particularly Democrats—to register to vote from abroad.

However, our chapter has other objectives. We run events--such as speakers and film screenings—to keep informed at this particularly critical moment in history. Most of our events are open to the French and other nationalities, as we wish to reach out to international friends.

Speakers have included Dr. Phebe Marr, Iraq authority often seen on CNN; William Pfaff, International Herald Tribune columnist; Carrie Olson, of MoveOn.org; human rights lawyer Ann Fagan Ginger; Rich DeLeon, Chair Emeritus -Dept Political Science of San Francisco State University; Stephan Weissman, former European editor - www.truthout.org and former Hollywood actress, Betsy Blair.

We have screened MANY documentaries, including The Corporation, Bush's Brain and others...

Objectives include:

  • finding & registering to vote all Democrats in Southwestern France
  • electing a Democrat President of the United States in 2008
  • sharing information about pertinent legislation and political events in the U.S.
  • lobbying U.S. officials on issues of importance to expatriate Americans, such as expatriate voting rights, citizenship, social security benefits and tax regulations.
  • maintaining an open and positive dialogue with French residents and officials in the interest of enhancing Franco-American relations

DA membership is open to all American citizens of voting age who subscribe to the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party of the U.S. and who reside in France. There are no membership dues.

Report on 2007 General Meeting
We had a good turnout for our DAFsw Annual General Meeting: 26 U.S. citizens including NINE Americans who had never attended any of our meetings before. It was great to welcome new faces!

We began the meeting with introductions and reading aloud the Amendments making up The Bill of Rights--just to remind ourselves of what we are losing under the Bush Administration....

After reports on chapter activities in 2007, membership and a treasury report, the new DAFsw Executive Committee was elected by acclamation. They are:

Chair: Meredith Wheeler
Executive Vice-Chair: Zev Peretz
Vice Chair: Nina de Voodg Fuller (who was also elected as a Member- at-Large to the DAF ExCom recently)
Vice Chair: Susanna Stevens
Secretary: Annie Sargent
Treasurer: Zev Peretz
Membership: Rebecca White Bordonado

Members-at-Large:
Susan Barreault (also Book Club Coordinator)
Carolyn Byrne
Gina Granelli de Comarmond
Elyse Rivin
Angela Shaw
Susan Vrona Bejina (who updates our web page)
Lessley Berry provided indispensable help organizing the elections. Merci, Lessley!

Thanks to all those willing to continue to donate their time & talent and a special welcome to the new members joining us: Carolyn Byrne, Annie Sargent (for a long-awaited & much-needed Secretary!) and Zev Peretz as Treasurer and Executive Vice-Chair.

At the meeting we unveiled our new regional map plotting WHERE Southwest chapter members live--and where we have vast blank areas..... Many thanks to John and Mary Long and Susanna Stevens for creating this map.

The evening finished with the screening of a compelling and informative PBS Frontline documentary, The Lost Year in Iraq—about the disastrous and disorganized mess of the first year of American rule in Iraq under Jake Garner and Paul Bremmer. If you were unable to attend but would like to screen this DVD, please ask to borrow it (it's an American standard DVD).

Special thanks to Anne O'Mahoney from the Ecole du Commerce who organized the room for us and Greg Voss who mastered the unwilling technology of DVD projection! Also thanks to the team who set-up the room & did clean-up: Rebecca, Nina, Susanna, Gina, Yves and Zev.
